My services
I write about a wide range of topics, from hard news to conservation, the sea, yachting, power boating, motoring, and science.
I specialise in helping my readers to visualise the impact of new concepts. I describe them in everyday language; I write engaging stories about their impact; I show how they help us meet the challenges of everyday life; I illustrate how they affect our future.
My writing evolved out of a 15-year career as an electronics design and manufacturing engineer. I always enjoyed describing new concepts to general audiences, and so I often found myself busy with marketing literature, presentations, and documentation for customers.
I became a full-time writer and journalist in mid-2004.
I hold a Post-graduate Diploma in Literature from Victoria University of Wellington, a degree in strategic communication management, and a NZ Certificate in Engineering.
Feature articles
I regularly contribute to Boating New Zealand and Engineering Insight. I have also written for NZ Trucking, NZ Business, and NZ Fishing News, as well as several corporate magazines.
Science writing
Science writing is one of my favourite genres. I believe that science and technology are more interesting when seen in the context of everyday experience. Through science, we make sense of the world around us. Through technology, we enrich our lives. But before we can understand how new developments will affect us, we must be able to see them in our minds' eyes.
Web site development
I have been building and managing fast, easy-to-navigate web sites like this one since 1998. If you'd like your own web site, but aren't sure how to get started, why not contact me.
Editing
I sub-edit and/or copy-edit most types of documents, from brochures to feature articles, scientific papers and fiction.
